SURVEILLANCE TOWER

Looking down at the civilisation this broken surveillance tower sees it all. Based on the design for the Small Screen Goddess this screen will be replicated again as a screen for one of Hera’s babies.

Themes in Surveillance Ceramics

  • The “Eye of Heaven”: Many artists use the eye as a central motif to represent the fear of being watched. This often connects modern CCTV culture with ancient symbols like the nazar boncuk (evil eye) for protection. I use this on my surveillance tower, the Cyclopes one eye and also the Screen Goddess’s eyes,
  • Perception and Distortions: Artworks like “WITNESS: Eight Instruments of Distortion” use hanging ceramic and concrete forms to warp the tools of observation, translating them into “geometries of distrust”.
