Baby Hermes: The Tiny Thief
Just after being born, the god Hermes snuck out of his crib, stole Apollo’s cattle, and created the first lyre. When Apollo tracked him down, baby Hermes swaddled himself, pretended to be an innocent newborn, and then defended himself in a trial against Zeus, eventually trading the cattle for a new musical instrument.
Theseus’s Misadventure
Theseus and his friend Pirithous tried to kidnap Persephone, wife of Hades. Hades, rather than simply killing them, invited them to sit at a dinner table, where they were immediately bound by snakes. When Heracles came to rescue them later, he freed Theseus but had to leave a part of his butt behind, earning him the nickname “Hypolispos,” or “Flat Ass”.
